Research and Teaching Software for Electrophysiology

We are proud to offer the following programs from Professor Peter Barry of the University of NSW, Sydney.

These programs are each computer-aided learning (CAL) programs, which are designed to simulate actual experiments and teach some difficult concepts in physiology.

Free demonstration versions of JPCalc (a DOS version only) and of each of the Windows teaching programs are available.

JPCalcW
Junction Potential Calculator
A research (teaching) program designed:
  • to show graphically how junction potentials arise in a variety of different patch-clamp configurations and other electrophysiological situations
  • to then enable the ready calculation of junction potential corrections, given the solution data, and
  • to show clearly how those junction potential corrections need to be applied to the appropriate physiological measurements, including even the direct measurement of liquid junction potentials.

ArtMemW
Artificial Membrane Simulator

ArtMemW is an interactive teaching program which graphically simulates an experiment illustrating how membrane potentials are set up across an ion-selective artificial membrane. It would be a good first introduction to membrane potentials, prior to using the MemPotW program (see below).

MemPotW
Membrane Potential Simulator

MemPotW an interactive teaching program that simulates the measurement of membrane potentials on excitable cells. It is designed to show students how resting membrane potentials and action potential peaks depend on [K] and [Na] concentrations and on their relative permeabilities.

MemPotW is AU$395, including Instructor's Manual, Student's Notes and departmental site license.

MemCableW
Membrane Cable Simulator

MemCableW is another interactive teaching program, simulating a microelectrode experiment which illustrates the passive time-dependent electrical responses of a spherical neuron and the cable properties of a nerve and muscle fibre.

MemCableW is AU$395, including Instructor's Manual, Student's Notes and departmental site license.

Membrane Programs Teaching Suite

ArtMemW, MemPotW and MemCableW form a very useful suite of programs for teaching, and are available at a bundled price of AU$595 for any two of the three, or AU$795 for all three.
